Senior
Theater
was founded by Irene Silver and incorporated as a non-profit
501(c)(3) organization in 2000 and is the only official senior
theater group in Florida. SST performs musical variety shows,
dramas, and intergenerational projects. From flappers to the
Zigfield Follies; from World War II to Rock n Roll and Rap; from
creative short plays to serious drama and hilarious comedy; the
productions of this organization presents entertainment for all
ages.
In the beginning, we researched other performing groups and
especially other senior theater groups. We incorporated the best of
these groups into our organization. Now many senior groups use the
Sarasota
Senior
Theater
as a model.
We were the first
senior theater group to establish intergenerational outreach. In
2003, we conducted a nine-week series of performing arts workshops
for seniors and children (from eight to fourteen) to demonstrate how
the two groups could perform together and learn from each other.
Since then, young people are featured in nearly every major show we
have produced. They give us energy and we give them wisdom.

Seniors - 55 years of age and older - have an opportunity to
showcase their talent in large and small productions within the
community. Whether it is acting, singing, dancing, writing, make-up,
or set and costume design, the
Sarasota
Senior
Theater
offers a chance to make dreams come true. Some senior volunteers
make their show business debut, while others have been involved with
theater throughout their life – some even professionally. Performances are conducted at clubs, retirement homes, churches, and
other facilities, usually for nominal donations that help the
Sarasota
Senior
Theater
pay for music, costumes, scenery, and the many other expenses
associated in putting together a show. |
